Took it to our mechanic, who I figured would just re-clamp it. When I went to pick it up, he said "no charge", they just removed it. He said they do it all the time and it's not an essential part.

If it was under the hood he probably would have said header heat shield sillies! Anyways. If you're talking about the header heat shield then yes you should leave it installed and refasten it somehow.
