WebCystatin C is a further measure of renal function from which eGFR can be derived, which is less influenced by muscle mass and may be more accurate in detecting CKD in people with 'borderline' renal function (eGFR values between 45–59 mL/min/1.73m 2 with no evidence of proteinuria) [NICE, 2015a]. WebCystatin C or cystatin 3 (formerly gamma trace, post-gamma-globulin, or neuroendocrine basic polypeptide), [5] a protein encoded by the CST3 gene, is mainly used as a biomarker of kidney function. Recently, it has been studied for its role in predicting new-onset or deteriorating cardiovascular disease.
